Skylights. Skylights aid in bringing the daylight into your living room. If you need to light up an area that doesn't have a lot of ceiling space, you should use tubular skylights. The good side with these fixtures is that they collect and channel daylight from a collector on the roof to a diffuser in the room's ceiling without the need of you installing a finished skylight.
Floor lamps and table lamps should be dispersed about the room such that, separate from any other lighting, they can reasonably light the room for most occasions. The room size will ultimately dictate the number of lamps, but if you have some other light source, three lamps is a good number to consider - one being a floor lamp. Keep in mind that dark lamp shades really restrict the lamp's overall light output.
Finally, on the day that you are entertaining guests, use only your lamps and spotlights and perhaps light a few candles in the room to create added intimacy. The ceiling light should remain switched off.
